This unexpected object to look for when traveling & antiquing

By Amitha Verma

I’m always on the hunt for decor that is timeless, won’t go out of style and helps me organize and beautify my home.

Especially when I am traveling or on a fun outing like visiting Round Top or my favorite antique shop, Village Antiques in Houston.

I may not need a new (or old) piece of furniture but I still love to bring something home. I just can’t resist.

Just last week, we were traveling in a very small remote village, and I stumbled upon a gorgeous painting that I had to pick up to remember that experience. Hubby certainly did an eye roll, but I love it!

I’ve shared a few blogs about some of my favorite pieces like these here but I’ve never told you about this coveted object.

One of my favorite decor objects to look for are vintage and antique style pottery pieces, platters, plates and jars. New, antique, vintage, anything goes but there is a system that I follow I share with you below.

Seems ordinary but they are super helpful when decorating.

How so?

They fill up bookshelves and countertops beautifully and they help contain objects that might otherwise be lying around.

What should you look for?

Design tip → Decide on your color and style. That way as you find more you can create a gorgeous collection. Group them together as you find them.

What does that mean?

Decide what you like and buy similar styles.

For example, I love gorgeous white, ironstone, and creamware jars.

Here are the different ones I’ve found over the last decade. I’m drawn to these and I’ve committed to them in my decor.

These are all pieces of antique pottery, stoneware, creamware and more that I’ve collected over the years. I placed them above my kitchen sink so I get to enjoy them everyday. I followed the same advice I’m sharing today. Stick to 1-2 styles so you can easily add to and group your collection over the years.

So when I’m looking around I love finding more to add into my decor.

That’s not to say you have to commit to one style.

I also love crystal and have created a little collection of these in my home as well!

The takeaway --> don’t buy a big variety of very different styles. Stick to one or two such as ironstone, blue & white ginger jars or crystal, imari and start collecting.

Where to use them

You can use these in any place you need to fill in for volume.

A few natural spots when I am decorating include bookshelves, countertops, and bathrooms like I did here in one of my bookshelves.

I love using these where I want to “fill in” with a bigger volume or take up more.

What to put inside

What I love about old-style pottery is you can use these simply as they are. They are just gorgeous on their own and a work of art.

You can also fill them in with flowers both fresh and artificial. This is a great way to change up your decor weekly or seasonally simply by changing the color of flowers.

Or you can use this to organize to hold craft items or office supplies.

So if you’ve been thinking about what to start collecting - this is a great item to add into your decor.

They take up lots of space, can help you express your passions and personality and can help you organize! It’s a win-win.

I’ll admit these objects are a little harder to travel with but from my own past experience, it’s 100% worth it. I’ve brought back these sorts of pieces from all over France, Budapest, Mexico and Round Top and love every single of them throughout my home.

I know this isn’t a crazy huge renovation project loaded with tons of design tips, but sometimes, oftentimes, these little spruce ups are what truly add the warmth and coziness into your home.

We often focus on the big stuff, but it’s these little touches that capture you and that feeling of heart in the home.

So be sure to make time for these little projects that go a long way.

I promise you will love the end result.

Leave a comment and let me know your favorite style. There is no right or wrong. Your home should be an expression of you and your authenticity!

I can’t wait to see what you love in the comments below!

Just a quick note to say that I love your new paint line!! The colors are beautiful and it goes on so smooth and silky. The gray wax is fabulous. I'm getting some great new looks with your paint but most of all I'm having fun using them!! Hope all is well.
